All three options bear a strong similarity to one another, and all share the same uprated tougher elliptical plier head. (Just like the Leatherman Charge and Leatherman Wave).
The pliers on the Leatherman Fuse are the exact same thickness as my previous Leatherman PST, however the pivot area is the considerably wider and tougher. When using the Fuse on several odd jobs around my house, I am not convinced that this extra width got in the way at all. With a larger wire cutter area too, I am certain the revised plier head design is a vast improvement.
If you are more used to the first generation of Leatherman multi tools, the one thing that jumps out at you about the Leatherman Fuse is its handle scales. Plastic grips with rounded edges have been molded in along the sides, leading to the pliers being much more comfortable to hold on to than the former plain steel edges. A number of finger grooves has been added as well, which will help keep the product from sliding when your hands are damp.
Within one handle, the Leatherman Fuse packs a set of scissors, a Phillips screwdriver, and a cap lifter/can opener/wire stripper combo blade. The scissors are good, but they are a backward step in my opinion. For some reason, Leatherman Tool Group has built them smaller than the original Wave's scissors, with a considerably shorter cutting action. I liked the old ones better.
A big improvement though, is the Phillips screwdriver. Unlike those on cheap imports, it has a really useful shape to it. It's also easily long enough to reach deep into those recessed screws within the battery storage area on my child's new toys.
The opposite handle has a clip point knife blade together with a couple of flat head screwdrivers, also a nice length.
Talking of long tools, this knife should be named the Crocodile Dundee of pocket tool blades, with significantly more reach than that of former multi tools in its sector. What a knife!
But compared to its cheaper cousin the Kick, the only additional tool the Fuse has is its scissors. In my opinion sucks. Why didn't Leatherman leave the stupid lanyard ring off the Fuse, and substituted a reasonable diamond file. I often need a file, and prefer not to carry a multi tool without one.
Another important point about the Fuse blades; they all lock. As it has the same rocker switch lock that Leatherman USA originally employed on the Crunch, every tool snaps securely into place with a reassuring click. I know, I carried the first PST without locking blades for over ten years. But it's like power steering on lorries; once it became available, it makes no sense to do without. Locking blades are a necessary thing in my view.
